GroupDocs.Markdown MCP server at a glance

An MCP server that gives AI agents the GroupDocs.Markdown engine as tools they can call

Illustration markdown

Clean Markdown, not scraped text

GroupDocs.Markdown keeps headings, lists, tables and images in proper Markdown structure, adds front matter when asked and converts only the pages you need, so your token budget goes to content.

Local by design

Your AI client starts the server as a local process over stdio. It opens no ports, sends no telemetry, and reads and writes only the folder you configure, so contracts, records and internal documents never leave your machine.

Works with every MCP client

Use it from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio 2022, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI. One-click installs and ready-made configurations are available for each client.

What the MCP server can do

One conversion tool tuned for LLM pipelines, knowledge bases and docs-as-code

Feature icon

20+ input formats

The convert_to_markdown tool converts PDF, DOCX, DOC, RTF, ODT, XLSX, CSV, EPUB, MOBI, TXT, CHM and more.

Feature icon

Structure preserved

Headings, lists, tables and emphasis come through as real Markdown, ready for chunking and embedding.

Feature icon

Images your way

Embed images as data URIs or save them as files next to the Markdown.

Feature icon

Page ranges

Convert only the section you need, such as pages 40 to 52, instead of the whole book.

Feature icon

Front matter and flavors

Add YAML front matter and choose GitHub-flavored or CommonMark output for static sites.

Feature icon

Protected documents

Pass a password to convert encrypted source files.

Feature icon

Inspect before converting

The get_document_info tool returns format, page count, title, author and encryption status.

Feature icon

Whole folders

Convert an archive folder and get the source format, page count and output size per file.

Feature icon

Flexible licensing

Start in evaluation mode, then use a license file or metered keys. The get_license_status tool shows which one is active.

What you can ask your agent

Typical GroupDocs.Markdown MCP scenarios, each with the prompt that drives it

Convert documents for RAG

Retrieval quality depends on clean input. The agent converts each document to structured Markdown and reports page counts and output sizes, so you can spot files that converted badly before they reach the index. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Convert every PDF in my documents folder to Markdown.
For each file, give me the page count and the Markdown length.

Convert one section, not the whole book

Large manuals waste tokens. Ask for a page range and the agent converts just that section, after checking the page count and title first. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

How many pages does handbook.pdf have?
Then convert pages 40 to 52 to Markdown.

Publish documents to a static site

Docs-as-code needs front matter and image files. The agent converts documents with front matter, GitHub flavor and images saved next to each page, ready for Hugo or Docusaurus. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Convert these documents to Markdown with front matter,
GitHub flavor and images saved as files

Run on-premise with Docker

For regulated environments, run the server inside your perimeter. Mount the documents folder and the license, and pin the image version for change control. Architecture and security model: on-premise deployment.

docker-compose.yml

services:
  groupdocs-markdown:
    image: ghcr.io/groupdocs-markdown/markdown-net-mcp:26.9.0
    volumes:
      - "/srv/documents:/data"
      - "/srv/licenses:/license:ro"
    environment:
      GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH: /data
      GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH: /license/GroupDocs.Total.lic
    stdin_open: true

Install in your AI client

Copy the configuration for your client, or use the one-click links at the top of the page

Register the server

Every client starts the server the same way. Set GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH to the folder with your documents, then restart the client. Leave GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH empty for evaluation mode. Configurations for Visual Studio 2022, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI are in the installation guide.
