GroupDocs.Merger MCP server at a glance

An MCP server that gives AI agents the GroupDocs.Merger engine as tools they can call

Illustration merger

The agent plans, the engine assembles

The agent works out the order, the page ranges and how to chain the calls. GroupDocs.Merger joins and splits the files with formatting and page layout intact.

Local by design

Your AI client starts the server as a local process over stdio. It opens no ports, sends no telemetry, and reads and writes only the folder you configure, so contracts, records and internal documents never leave your machine.

Works with every MCP client

Use it from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio 2022, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI. One-click installs and ready-made configurations are available for each client.

What the MCP server can do

Combine, split and reassemble documents in 30+ formats from a single prompt

Feature icon

Merge documents

The merge tool combines two to four files per call, and the agent chains calls to assemble packs of any size.

Feature icon

Split into pages

The split tool saves the pages you name as separate documents.

Feature icon

Extract pages in bulk

Pull page 1, or the last page, out of every document in a folder with one prompt.

Feature icon

Reassemble in any order

Extract pages 3, 6 and 8 and merge them back in the order you ask for.

Feature icon

Document packs

Build onboarding, tender or closing packs from a folder in file-name order.

Feature icon

Page count first

The get_document_info tool returns file type, page count and page sizes, so the agent picks valid ranges.

Feature icon

PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Works with PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and 30+ more document formats.

Feature icon

Protected documents

Pass a password to split encrypted source files.

Feature icon

Flexible licensing

Start in evaluation mode, then use a license file or metered keys. The get_license_status tool shows which one is active.

What you can ask your agent

Typical GroupDocs.Merger MCP scenarios, each with the prompt that drives it

Merge any number of documents

Each merge call takes up to four files. The agent plans the batches, chains each result into the next call and tells you the final file name. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

There are nine PDFs. Merge them four at a time, chaining each result
into the next call, and tell me the final file name.

Split a document and keep the pages you need

Pull specific pages out of a long report and, if you like, merge them back into a short extract in your order. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Extract pages 3, 6 and 8 of report.pdf,
then merge the three results into one file in that order

Assemble a document pack

Closing sets, tenders and onboarding packs are folders turned into one file. The agent merges them in file-name order and reports the page count of the result. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Merge every PDF in my documents folder into one pack, in file-name order.
How many pages does the final pack have?

Run on-premise with Docker

For regulated environments, run the server inside your perimeter. Mount the documents folder and the license, and pin the image version for change control. Architecture and security model: on-premise deployment.

docker-compose.yml

services:
  groupdocs-merger:
    image: ghcr.io/groupdocs-merger/merger-net-mcp:26.9.0
    volumes:
      - "/srv/documents:/data"
      - "/srv/licenses:/license:ro"
    environment:
      GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH: /data
      GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH: /license/GroupDocs.Total.lic
    stdin_open: true

Install in your AI client

Copy the configuration for your client, or use the one-click links at the top of the page

Register the server

Every client starts the server the same way. Set GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH to the folder with your documents, then restart the client. Leave GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH empty for evaluation mode. Configurations for Visual Studio 2022, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI are in the installation guide.
