GroupDocs.Metadata MCP server at a glance

An MCP server that gives AI agents the GroupDocs.Metadata engine as tools they can call

Illustration metadata

See what your files reveal

Documents and photos carry authors, companies, edit history, GPS coordinates and camera details. The agent reads them with GroupDocs.Metadata, explains what matters and removes or corrects it on request.

Local by design

Your AI client starts the server as a local process over stdio. It opens no ports, sends no telemetry, and reads and writes only the folder you configure, so contracts, records and internal documents never leave your machine.

Works with every MCP client

Use it from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio 2022, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI. One-click installs and ready-made configurations are available for each client.

What the MCP server can do

Read, search, write and remove metadata in documents, images and media files

Feature icon

Read all metadata

The read_metadata tool returns author, title, dates and custom properties as JSON.

Feature icon

Find a specific property

The search_metadata tool matches properties by category, name or value.

Feature icon

Write and correct properties

The write_metadata tool sets or adds a single property and saves an updated copy.

Feature icon

Strip before sharing

The remove_metadata tool cleans all removable metadata, or only the categories you name.

Feature icon

EXIF, XMP and IPTC

Read camera, date taken and GPS data from photos and images.

Feature icon

Audit for leaks

Ask which files still carry an old company name or a GPS position.

Feature icon

Bulk edits

Set Company and Author on every document in a folder with one prompt.

Feature icon

Document info

The get_document_info tool returns file type, size, page count and encryption status.

Feature icon

Flexible licensing

Start in evaluation mode, then use a license file or metered keys. The get_license_status tool shows which one is active.

What you can ask your agent

Typical GroupDocs.Metadata MCP scenarios, each with the prompt that drives it

Strip metadata before sharing

Files you send carry more than their content. The agent removes all metadata, or only the fields you name, and tells you exactly what it removed. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Remove the author and company fields from the files in my documents folder,
but keep the title and dates

Read EXIF, XMP and IPTC from images

Photos record camera, time and place. Ask the agent which photos have GPS coordinates, or which were taken with the same camera. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

What EXIF data do these photos have?
Include camera, date taken and GPS if present.

Audit document metadata

Before a release or a rebrand, find every file that still names an old company, author or project. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Does any property in these files still contain the old company name?

Run on-premise with Docker

For regulated environments, run the server inside your perimeter. Mount the documents folder and the license, and pin the image version for change control. Architecture and security model: on-premise deployment.

docker-compose.yml

services:
  groupdocs-metadata:
    image: ghcr.io/groupdocs-metadata/metadata-net-mcp:26.9.0
    volumes:
      - "/srv/documents:/data"
      - "/srv/licenses:/license:ro"
    environment:
      GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH: /data
      GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH: /license/GroupDocs.Total.lic
    stdin_open: true

Install in your AI client

Copy the configuration for your client, or use the one-click links at the top of the page

Register the server

Every client starts the server the same way. Set GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH to the folder with your documents, then restart the client. Leave GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH empty for evaluation mode. Configurations for Visual Studio 2022, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI are in the installation guide.
