GroupDocs.Signature MCP server at a glance

An MCP server that gives AI agents the GroupDocs.Signature engine as tools they can call

Illustration signature

Sign and verify without leaving the chat

The agent picks the signature type and placement. GroupDocs.Signature applies digital, QR code, barcode or text signatures and verifies existing ones, so a signing or audit task is one prompt.

Local by design

Your AI client starts the server as a local process over stdio. It opens no ports, sends no telemetry, and reads and writes only the folder you configure, so contracts, records and internal documents never leave your machine.

Works with every MCP client

Use it from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio 2022, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI. One-click installs and ready-made configurations are available for each client.

What the MCP server can do

Nine tools to sign, verify and inspect signatures in 30+ document formats

Feature icon

Sign documents

The sign tool applies text, QR code, barcode or digital certificate signatures.

Feature icon

Verify signatures

The verify tool checks text, QR code, barcode and digital signatures and returns a JSON report.

Feature icon

Certificate details

The search_digital_signatures tool returns signer, issuer, serial number, validity and signing time.

Feature icon

Read QR codes and barcodes

The search_qr_codes and search_barcodes tools decode values with their page and position.

Feature icon

Find stamps and image signatures

The search_text_signatures and search_image_signatures tools list text stamps and signature images.

Feature icon

Audit a folder

Ask which documents are unsigned, or carry signatures that are no longer valid.

Feature icon

Document info

The get_document_info tool returns type, page count and page sizes for placement.

Feature icon

PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Works with PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and 30+ more formats.

Feature icon

Flexible licensing

Start in evaluation mode, then use a license file or metered keys. The get_license_status tool shows which one is active.

What you can ask your agent

Typical GroupDocs.Signature MCP scenarios, each with the prompt that drives it

Sign a document with a certificate

Point the agent at the document and the certificate file. It signs locally, so neither the contract nor the private key leaves your machine. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Sign contract.pdf digitally using signing-cert.pfx

Verify who signed and when

Before you rely on a signed document, check it. The agent verifies the signatures and reports signer, certificate, signing time and validity. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Verify the signatures on contract_signed.pdf.
Who signed it, with which certificate, and when?

Read QR codes and barcodes

Invoices and shipping documents carry references in QR codes and barcodes. The agent decodes them and tells you which page each one is on. Step by step: guide and blog walkthrough.

Prompt

Read the QR codes and barcodes in invoice.pdf
and tell me what they contain

Run on-premise with Docker

For regulated environments, run the server inside your perimeter. Mount the documents folder and the license, and pin the image version for change control. Architecture and security model: on-premise deployment.

docker-compose.yml

services:
  groupdocs-signature:
    image: ghcr.io/groupdocs-signature/signature-net-mcp:26.9.0
    volumes:
      - "/srv/documents:/data"
      - "/srv/licenses:/license:ro"
    environment:
      GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH: /data
      GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH: /license/GroupDocs.Total.lic
    stdin_open: true

Install in your AI client

Copy the configuration for your client, or use the one-click links at the top of the page

Register the server

Every client starts the server the same way. Set GROUPDOCS_MCP_STORAGE_PATH to the folder with your documents, then restart the client. Leave GROUPDOCS_LICENSE_PATH empty for evaluation mode. Configurations for Visual Studio 2022, Windsurf, Cline, JetBrains Rider and Codex CLI are in the installation guide.
